When ISOs are proactive and informed, they can help students not only survive but thrive. With the right support, colleges can achieve student engagement, better retention, and a campus environment where international students feel like they truly belong.

Below is a practical checklist of resources every international student officer should share to ensure international students have the support they need to succeed academically, socially, and personally during their study abroad journey.

1. Orientation & Campus Navigation Resources:

The first week of moving abroad is often the hardest part of an international student’s entire journey as they are unfamiliar with places, systems and people. When students have their first day, they are unaware of any campus rules and regulations, such as the need to scan their ID card for attendance before sitting in class, or that you cannot go outside of college during your break time so when students don’t know anything and make such mistakes they get very worried. Additionally, if students become sick and need to visit a doctor, or if they need help from a teaching assistant before a test, they may not know where to go or whom to contact. This is why orientation and campus navigation resources are some of the most important resources international student officers should share.

A well-structured orientation program helps students understand how the college works, where to find key facilities, and who they can contact when they need help. International student officers can arrange an orientation program one day before the college starts, in which they can give a tour of the entire campus and explain everything. And, if this is not possible, colleges or ISOs can create a simple guidebook and provide it to every student on their first day, whether they are international students or newly admitted students. This guide can help them understand important things such as where their classes are located, how to reach the student office, and what the classroom rules are. For example, if a student is looking for their A-5 classroom, they can quickly find it and reach there before the class starts. Providing these resources early helps reduce confusion, builds confidence, and allows international students to start their academic journey feeling prepared and supported.

    2. Academic Support Resources:

Every college have a different teaching style and every country have a different language, which makes it very difficult for international students to understand the lecture so they do not complete their work, do not understand the lectures, and because of this they fail, and when they think that they have come so far to study and are also failing, they get very disheartened and demotivated.

Due to this, international students officers should create a separate place for students where assistant teachers (AT) are available for every subject who can help students any time, and teachers of different languages should also be available so that students can understand better in their language. In this way they can get motivation to study and they can also enjoy going to AT rooms because there are also other students who are stuck because of the language or the teaching style.

According to the Institute of International Education, more than 1 million international students study in the United States, and many universities provide specialized academic support services to help them adapt to a new education system. These resources help students build confidence, improve their academic performance, and feel more comfortable participating in classroom discussions.

    3. Mental Health and Wellbeing Resources:

Leaving home to study abroad is one of the boldest things a student can do. Starting from scratch in a new country where they don’t know anyone can be overwhelming. Cultural differences such as the weather, food and language add to the challenge. If they’re not particularly extroverted, it can feel especially difficult. Their meals taste different, their phone calls with family start happening at odd hours, or sometimes, not at all. There are moments of difficult adjustment and they miss their friends, family and homeland and due to this students may start feeling homesick and become isolated. As a result, they may feel very emotional, stop eating properly, and frequently experience headaches. These challenges can make it difficult for them to focus on their studies and may distract them from their goals.

Therefore, it’s very important for ISOs to keep mental health workshops, especially for international students because when they will see that there are many other students with them who are facing the same thing, they will know that they are not alone and just as they are not giving up, they also have to not give up. Moreover, when they listen to the motivational speech they will realize that they are not alone and support is always available for them so they will feel better, their hearts will be lightened and they will try again to bring excitement and how they have to achieve their goals.

    4. Social and Cultural Integration Resources:

Some students are extroverted and make friends from the first class, but what about those who are afraid of how to start a conversation, or if they start a conversation they worry about being made fun of or they might think that the other person might not be like them or share their interests. Because of this, international students ruin their abroad journey by crying, overthinking, and staying alone. But international students officers can help them in this matter, for example, they can organize more events at the beginning of the year so that students can interact with each other, participate in activities together, and make friends so that their college life goes well.

And there should be sports or games-related activities on campus every month because when students play together in teams they talk to each other, add each other on social media, and automatically become friends without awkwardness. And it should become necessary for every student to participate in club, society, or sports, in this way, they will feel confident enough to take the first step; otherwise, fear may stop them from trying. As a result, international students can adjust to college life, start enjoying their experience, and make new friends.

Research highlighted by NAFSA shows that students who participate in campus organizations and social activities are more likely to report a stronger sense of belonging and satisfaction with their university experience.

    5. Safety Resources:

Safety resources are very important for every student in college because many places on campus are newly built, work is going on, construction is going on, some have problems like something becomes old so it becomes weak so it is very important to make every student aware of it. For this, announcements can be made in groups, emails can be sent, or a resource paper can be given to everyone in which alerts, and don’ts points are written and where they are not allowed to go.

I remember in my college some students were playing cricket on the first floor and when the ball fell on the shelter of the lower floor, he jumped and went to pick up the ball, he didn’t know that the shelter was weak, so he fell and his foot was fractured, that’s why before students do anything wrong in fun or playing, it is very important to put precautions in their minds so that they remain safe. And international student officers should also ensure that students are aware of important resources such as campus security contacts, emergency helplines, campus safety apps, health centers, and insurance guidance.

    6. Financial Guidance and Scholarship Resources:

As an international student it can be challenging to manage finances because they are far from home and managing finances all by themselves which can be overwhelming as they are possibly dealing with currency exchange rates, high living costs and limited job options due to visa restrictions. However, many colleges offer discounts and scholarships but students don’t know that they can get their fees halved based on their good grades or being an international student. And due to such financial burdens, they get stressed out, don’t go to events, don’t hang out, and isolate themselves.

That’s why, they should know what financial help is available for them in their college and because many colleges provide discounts and scholarships to support students. Therefore, the ISO should tell every student the complete scholarship criteria at the time of admission or give a guide in which everything is written, for example, 20% off on tuition fees on 2A*. In this way, every student who cannot afford the fees will also be able to take admission and spend their college life peacefully without the tension of money. And if the college does not offer discounts or scholarships, then the ISO should have advisors in the college who can financially guide the students, teach them budgeting, and tell them strategies on how they can save their money.

    Conclusion:

It is not only necessary to have a welcome event at the start of college to make the children happy, but it is more important to support them mentally, give them academic guidance, and provide financial support so that international students have the information and support they need to navigate campus life with confidence and so that if they ever get stuck in something, they do not get worried, but they already know what to do. Therefore it’s important for ISO to share this checklist of resources as the right resources can make a significant difference in how students adjust to their new environment.
