Students often face several common challenges when technology is integrated into their learning environments:

1. High Costs of Advanced Educational Technologies: 

    Technologies like AR and VR are very beneficial for students’ learning as they allow students to immerse themselves in interactive, hands-on experiences that were previously impossible but these advanced technologies are very expensive and it’s not just the purchase that’s costly. Maintaining them, providing training on how to use them, and repairing them also adds to the expense. Because of this, colleges’ funds can be depleted and even after spending so much money, if not every class and every student in the college can use the technology, then there’s no benefit to using such advanced and expensive technology.

    Besides this, even if a college doesn’t use advanced technologies and instead uses tools and apps on laptops and mobile phones, it will still cost the college a significant amount because many effective tools require purchasing subscriptions. With so many students in a college, buying expensive subscriptions for different platforms will still strain limited educational budgets and resources.

    2. Unreliable Internet:

    As more devices connect to school networks, the internet slows down because there’s a lot of pressure on it so slow Wi-Fi, dropped connections, or dead zones in classrooms can bring lessons, assessments, and digital tools to a halt. 

    Besides this, if students are studying at home, doing group projects, or taking online classes, and they don’t have internet devices at home, it’s a challenge for them as not all students have equal access to reliable internet or personal devices at home. This creates a gap in their ability to participate in online activities, complete assignments, or access resources, which can frustrate them and negatively affect their learning experience. Moreover, there are many students who use mobile data but using mobile data requires strong signals, and sometimes mobile data doesn’t work properly so this can increase their stress and also lead to demotivation in their studies.

    3. Privacy and Cybersecurity Concerns:

    As educational sectors are becoming more digitised with each passing day, the certain cybersecurity risks have become increasingly common. Many digital learning platforms require students to create accounts and store personal data. 

    Furtheremore, if there are platforms where you can connect with other people, then you have personal chats with your friends, secrets, and sometimes your friendships are too good that you even exchange passwords with each other. A data breach can occur and because of this, all sorts of damage can happen to students. When their sensitive information is leaked, it can lead to widespread fear and distress as private conversations and personal details become exposed. This exposure can have lasting repercussions, impacting not only their immediate emotional well-being but also potentially their future safety and reputation. According to the UK Government’s  Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/26, 98% of higher education institutions and 88% of further education colleges identified a cyber breach or attack in the previous 12 months. This highlights how frequently educational institutions are targeted by cyber threats. 

    4. Digital Distractions:

    With smartphones, social media, and notifications always within reach, it becomes difficult to maintain focus during study sessions. And it’s an obvious point that if you focus on other things like checking your phone while studying then you won’t be able to study properly as your focus will not stay on one thing because whenever you will get any message, call or any other notification so you will feel curious to check the phone and once you touch the phone then two to three hours just pass away without you even realizing it as a result you lose the motivation to study. Research also shows that it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to regain focus after a distraction which means even small interruptions can significantly reduce study efficiency and make it harder for students to complete their tasks on time. Therefore, because of technology integration, students may find it difficult to stay engaged with their coursework and manage their time effectively.

    5. Decreased Physical activity and Socialisation:

    Technology integration has made learning more convenient and accessible. For example, many students don’t go to college thinking they can comfortably take online classes from home. Similarly, there are many weak students for whom extra classes are arranged after college hours but these students also don’t take extra classes because they can watch recorded lectures, which are not that effective for them. This is because in recorded lectures, you cannot ask questions from the teacher or ask them to explain with more examples. 

    Not only this, but many students become so comfortable with technology like online activities, online group projects, and discussions, that their confidence in physical interaction decreases because they feel shy and cannot comfortably ask questions in a classroom. Also, they miss opportunities to develop interpersonal skills, expand their social networks, and build meaningful friendships.

    6. Overdependence on Technology for Learning:

    Due to the trendy tools that every student is using nowadays like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, students have become so reliant on these tools that if they don’t understand something, they ask these tools without thinking for themselves. If they can’t solve a math problem, they copy the solution by asking them without trying, which has reduced their own thinking potential. This is the reason why when a tricky question comes in exams, students cannot solve it and they fail in exams. 

    This habit of always asking AI means students might not learn how to be tough when things get hard. Instead of trying to solve a problem, even if it’s difficult, they just ask the AI. Working through a tough problem, even if it takes a while, actually makes you stronger mentally and helps you understand things better. If they don’t do this, they might get easily discouraged when they face problems that AI can’t just solve for them right away. A 2024 study of 300 university students  found that the top five negative effects of AI dependency were increased laziness, the spread of misinformation, reduced creativity, and weaker critical and independent thinking. The study highlights that overreliance on AI can negatively affect students’ learning habits and cognitive development.

    7. Waste of Time:

    Educational institutions often rely on multiple platforms for learning management, communication, attendance, security, and administration. When these systems don’t work together smoothly, the IT staff or teachers have to spend extra time fixing them or switching between different tools. This reduces efficiency and interrupts the learning process.

    For example, a class typically lasts only one or two hours. If teachers spend the first 20–30 minutes resolving login issues, setting up software, or fixing connectivity problems, there is less time available for teaching and student interaction. As a result, planned lessons may not be completed, learning objectives may not be achieved, and students can lose focus and engagement. Ensuring that educational technologies are reliable, integrated, and easy to use is essential for maximizing instructional time and creating a smoother learning experience.

    The increase in technology has directly corresponded to the decrease in physical activity in college students.
